DigiPak Changes

DigiPak

Me and Jack made a couple of changes on the DigiPak we produced. These changes are not major but important we feel. The first change we made on the DigiPak was adding the bad website www.proxiesmusic.com on the back, we felt this would encourages buyers of the album to check the website out and get more involved with the band and possibly buy merchandise from the website. The next change we made was adding a barcode on the back of the DigiPak. The reason why we added a barcode was because of the authenticity that it would add to the digipak and make it seem like a real genuine album that will be sold to the public.

Magazine Advert Change

Magazine Advert
In class, Me and Jack showed the advert to our teacher. He said it was a good start but we need to add more colour towards the picture instead of just black and white.

Orignal Advert: This was the version Me and Jack produced in lesson. Our teacher thought it was not standing out due to the plain colour of the text involved in the advert.

Updated Version: To act on the comments made by our teacher, we decided to change the white text to bright red, this would go with the youtube logo in the corner. We then showed this to our teacher and we gained more feedback from our teacher. This version is now to bright and strain your eyes when looking at the advert.

Final Version: This is the version Me and Jack produced and our teacher saw it as the best of all the above. This advert has the right mix of white and red text so its stands out but not to bright. We feel this will bring audience and viewers to view the band more and gain more viewers.

Magazine Advert Process.

Magazine Advert Process

Below i'm going to show the steps it took to get to the completed advert me and Jack produced.
Step 1:
To start me and Jack got a plain black background, then we put the band name Proxies and name of the album in white writing this way the advert would stand out in a magazine due to the white writing being bright.

Step 2:
Then we added the release date of the album to make the audience aware of the date. This gets the audience ready for the release, we did it in white writing to blend in with the band name and title of album.

Step 3:
The next thing we added is the DigiPak cover, we created this before and added to the advert to make the audience aware of the cover to allow them to buy it with no problems finding it.

Step 4:
Is the next step we included the four major social networking site, Facebook, Youtube, Twitter and Tumblr. This is to show the audience that they can keep up to date on all things proxies by following them on these websites.

Step 5:
The next thing we thought we improve the magazine advert and that was including a picture of a trojan, this is due to the song being about a trojan.
This picture to the right is a picture of the editing process in which I turning the red background black to allow the picture to be included in the magazine advert, we then added an filter to the picture to make it more detailed and stand out.

Step 6:

This is the last step in completing the magazine advert. In this step we went online and found a review for proxies on hit the floor magazine. This quote is positive towards the band and this is good for the magazine advert and it says the band are good and a good way of gaining new audience's.

The completed Magazine Advert:

CD Idea

CD IDEA
Below is a quick idea me and jack came up with, as the X is a trademark of the band we thought we would try and recreate the X on the CD. We try to make it our own and more authentic.

Completed DigiPak

DigiPak

The two pictures below are those of the completed DigiPak for Proxies album. The album is called Trojan (inside your chest) as this is the main track from the album and that of the one we made a music video from.

The picture above is the front page, back page and a middle page. The front page is showing the band name and title of the of the album. The picture behind the writing is of the ocean because of our music video is by the docks in ipswich so we thought it would fit well. Then the back page has the same picture but just listing the four songs involved in the album. Then the middle page of the album is the band saying thanks to the friends and groups who have helped them reach the position they are in today.

The picture above is of the middle pages involved in the DigiPak. The X's are the trademark of the band. We created this using photoshop and then put the white on a black background to stand out. The middle panel above is pictures of the band and we edited them together, this is where the CD is going to go, we though this would look good when the Cd is removed. We are happy with the results of the DigiPak.

DigiPak Ideas

We have gone on photoshop and added filter effects to our chosen image however we came across four different effect, which we like a lot and stand out from the rest. We asked a teacher and some students in our class for there input to see what was the best one. Below are the chosen four filter effects:

Artistic: Plastic Wrap

Brush Strokes: Ink Outlines

Sketch: Reticulation

Texture: Craqelure

The one that was voted the favourite amongst people was called 'Ink Outlines' in the effect group Brush strokes. Our final choice is to use the 'Ink Outlines' as the majority favour it.

Feedback from rough cut

Monday me and Jack showed our rough cut to the rest of the class, every member of the class completed a music video questionnaire which would give us feedback on how to improve our music video.

Question 1 - How would you rate our video?

4 People said Excellent
6 People said Good
1 Person said Ok
0 said poor

Evaluation:

This shows the video is of good standard as the majority of the class thought it was of good standard and even some thought it was excellent, must be jacks acting.

Question 2 - What are the strengths of our video?

0 said performance was strong
9 said editing was strong
2 said lighting was strong
0 said lip syncing was strong
6 said narrative was strong
4 said star image was strong

Evaluation:

As the storyline is narrative based we are happy that other half of the class enjoyed the narrative and our editing is also strong point which is picked up by the class. The reason for 0 in performance and lip syncing is due to us not having any of this within the video.

Question 3 - How can we improve our music video?

3 people feel we should have more performance
4 people feel we need fine tune editing
0 people feel we need improving lip syncing
5 people feel we need improved lighting

Evaluation:

The major point put forward by the class was that the house scene was extremely dark. We will take this point and improve the lighting by colour correcting the house shots, so its light and you can see everything. Also the text message near the start of the video is to short and hard to read, so we will make this shot last longer so everyone will be able to read the message as its big part of the video.

Question 4 - Does the video suit the music track?

10 out of 11 people thought the video suited the music track.

Evaluation:

This shows the video me and jack have produced suits the track. If the answer was no we would have to think about changing the video which would waste time as we still need to produce digiPak and magazine advert. So we are glad that we don't have to re-film the video.

Solutions to the problems encountered.

Solutions

On the last post me and Jack explained some of the problems we have encountered during the filming and editing process. In this post me and Jack are explaining how we have overcome these problems. The first problem we had to overcome was that we changed the storyline involved in the treatment we did at the start of the year. The solution that we came up with was to make a new storyline which involved jack (the main character) going to a house that he owned money to. When he got there without the correct amount of money it kicked off and we finished with him on the floor outside the house. The second post that me and jack overcame was that when we original planed to film. We had anything sorted to film that day but the weather wasn't on our side and it started to rain therefore we had to cancel the day of filming, as we needed a clear dry day to film. Me and Jack had to organise this filming for a different and hoped it didn't rain on the new day for filming.

Problems We Encountered

Problems.

Over the course of the filming and editing process we didn't really come across many major problems as we set out what we wanted to do. The biggest problem that we came across was the change of plan in filming. This was at the critical point in the process as the time for filming was almost up. As you may be aware the original plan was to lose self control at a house party where the character would realise what has actually happened to him. This couldn't happen in the end due to certain circumstances. On one occasion we were supposed to film however the weather prevented us from doing this as the film would not benefit from a non clear day.

Roles Of Team

Roles Of Team

Throughout the course of filming and editing process me and Jack both had roles within the team. The roles are important to make sure we complete the process on time and we did this roles based on our ability to make sure we made the best music video possible. Jack was the main actor in the video, Jack also did the majority of the editing process as he has a better ability on final cut pro then me. I did all the camera work in the filming process. I gave Jack my opinion throughout the editing process on ideas he could possibly use to make the video better.

Lighting Plan

Lighting Plan

For our film we haven't used artificial lighting. For the inside areas we have used the normal light that is common to a normal room as we did not want to create any extra shadows. The outside areas is helped by natural daylight which gives our film the sufficient amount of light to make the character stand out. However now that we have filmed and finished the indoor scenes, the use of a fill light and maybe a reflector to build more suspense.

Magazine Advert's

Led Zeppelin

This is a magazine advert produced by Led Zeppelin for celebration day which got released on CD, DVD, BLU-RAY, Vinyl and Digital Download. This is effective because it is iconic for London. This is due to the band being from London so they incorporated there home town in the advert.  The advert is very colourful which makes it stand out with in the magazine and draws readers in.  Also the lights that are shining in the advert are cleverly used to show that there is a celebration going on which links with the title 'Celebration Day'

Kasabian

There is the good use of the letter 'K'. This has been used to join with the K on the 'King' playing card. The album name Empire is cleverly used in this advert as well as the album title is below what appears to be a King which links to the King playing card.

Researching DigiPak's

What is a DigiPak?

DigiPak is a style of packaging often used for CD's. DigiPak is typically in the form of a book style case, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD attached to the inside. DigiPak has now come to be used to describe all soft CD packaging. DigiPak are very common and very popular in modern times.

How does a DigiPak benefit the artist?

The front of the DigiPak will have some aspect of what the artist represents and what genre the CD inside is. The DigiPak will involve a message about the artist image. This then emphasises the artist band image which increases the popularity of the artist. The DigiPak benefits the artist and their music as its a promotional aspect of the music industry.

Change Of Plan For The Next Part Of Filming

Initially it was our idea to end the film with the house party scene which we scheduled to film during the half term week at a special location. However circumstances changed meaning we couldn't complete this task. We have now changed the idea which will filmed at the latter part of this week using a house and a few characters. The plan is to get ambushed and try to escape from a group of antagonists. Some details on the filming and editing will be to create fast paced shots which will give the film a good effect as the first part of the music video is fairly slow during the journey through Ipswich. Point of view shots will be good as they can capture atmosphere. During the editing process we shall use the colour correction 3 way video effect in Final Cut Pro. This will be used to enhance the normal colour to a dark/light colour. As a final added we will use a bit of lip sync but only for one of the choruses.

Production Editing

In the making of our music video, it's important to grab some shots of the ongoing process of editing. Below is a selection of shots of me and my group partner Jack working hard at editing.

Filming Update.

Today in our A2 media lesson, me and jack walked down to the waterfront and got 2 minutes of footage. We varied the shots we got and now we going to start the editing process. We still have got to get the house party footage which we are going to get within the next couple of weeks.

Location Shots

A couple of days ago, Me and Jack went down to areas of ipswich including ipswich waterfront and countryside areas to take location shots for where will film our music video. We haven't got all the location shots as our last scene is at a house for the house party scene. These are the shots we took:

Thursday, 11 October 2012

Shot List

The first initial shot will be an establishing shot which cover the whole of the Ipswich waterfront/dock area. This will showcase the male protagonist crouched on a bench whilst a female character is walking in his direction.
The next shot will be a medium close up which will change into a two shot enabling the audience to see the male and the female in conversation.
The rest of the shots that will be used during the music video will include long shots and this will probably be most common during the journey through the countryside sequence. Close ups will show the emotion of the character during his self destructive ways. For extra effect, I would like to experiment with a few of the shots at the house party scene with a fish eye lens. This would really capture the atmosphere and give off a great party spirit.

Mood Board

Above is a selection of images that have been developed from our initial mind map. We will discuss what they each mean and why we have chosen to use these.

The top left image is a picture of a distressed young woman who is representing binge drinking. This aspect will feature in our film in the the house party scene as the sad character will drink his sorrows away. This is the norm for a lot of teenagers and this takes place every weekend in their lives in the UK.

The top right image is a picture of a car chase. We decided not to include this as it would take a lot of time, and the right location is key. Also the cost to run vehicles such as cars can cost a lot so we will have to pass on this.

The next image is a description of a dead end in a relationship. This will feature at the start of our music video as a girl will end up breaking the heart of the male protagonist's heart. This will then lead to the destruction of his journey.

The bottom left image is an image of footsteps into the background. This represents the journey of a certain character. This aspect is included in our music video as it follows the self destructive journey of the guy that gets rejected by the girl right at the very start.

The bottom middle image is based on suicide. This is a big theme that is present in modern day Britain, as many teenagers are desperate to fit in or look the best however they don't agree with this and just end commiting suicide. This aspect does not feature in our music video as we feel its a bit too strong and people can get a different vibe from it.

The final image is a live video performance. This intially was one of my biggest ideas at the start as it could of been negotiable to film with the band. However this was shortlived that it would take a lot of time and money to find a slot with the band and a venue is near enough impossible in such a short amount of time.

Ideas Mind Map

Ideas

For the process of making our music video, the first stage was to note down some ideas that would lead to the development of the video. Below is the image which shows all of our original ideas.

As you can see we have made around 10 ideas and we came up with a clever idea of not just sticking to one idea as we wasn't sure if it would suit the video and sustain 3-4 minutes of footage. So instead we decided to incorporate a few ideas and mix it together to give more variety and not keep the conventions of the genre. Our final decision was to use a dead end in a relationship, raging teenagers and a journey for the character involved in the relationship. We will be using lip-syncing as well to add a bit more effect.

Feedback from results:

The majority of people we asked where female due to the lack of men in our media class. This could give a biased result towards the ideas that females enjoy. There was a mixed result for the next question, narrative based video received the most votes but it was very close between that and performance with only one vote in it. Narrative is what we were going with in the first place and these results have backed our decision. On the next question there was a majority winner in the length of the video which was 3-4 minutes, this is because its the length were you don't get bored due to being to long and not to short you don't get the video. The majority of people prefer a music video to be in colour, Me and Jack decide to go against and film in black and white because it adds suspense to the video and its surreal. The audience who filled in our questionnaire like to see a male protagonist in a narrative based music video and we are going with audience and using a male protagonist. Our audience watch a lot of videos, the majority watching 3-6 a day, therefore there feedback is important to us due to the amount of videos they watch and experience they have. The majority of our class enjoy rock and is there favourite genre. The song we have chosen from Proxies is a rock song so therefore the class should enjoy the song and music video we create. The favourite place for a music video to be hosted is at a festival, gig or area tours, as the band we have chosen are not doing any tours in the next couple of weeks we will not be able to do a festival music video. The next popular answer was anywhere, this tells us as a group it doesn't matter where the music video is shoot as long as its entertaining and keeps the viewer interested throughout the video. Everyone we asked in the questionnaire was aged 17 which is the target age we are targeting from 16-20, so the feedback we received will influence our final music video. Only one person have heard of the band proxies who'swhos song we are using. This good as it gives an underdog status to the song.

A2 Music Video Analysis: PSY Gangnam Style

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bZkp7q19f0

PSY - Gangnam Style

What makes this video effective?

This video is effective as its a very fast video with a lot going on. Everything is bright and easy to see.
This good as audiences will watch the video over and over as it easy to watch even know there is a lot going on. Also the video is effective due to the certain dance that the male protagonist does, this is repeated when ever the chorus comes on. The dance is really effective as it easy to do and audiences will remember the dance when ever the song is played on the radio for example. The video is very aesthetically pleasing to watch and makes you laugh at the same time which is always good for the audience to be happy when watching a video.  This is also very effective as it is a genre no one have had before, its like a korean pop. Both that and the dance are possibly the reason why its so popular in the UK and other parts of the world.

How are techniques (mise-en-scene, editing, camera work and sound) used to create an atmosphere and mood?

There are various locations used throughout the video, This is due to the video being a concept based video with a bit of performance in the dance that PSY does. The upbeat beast and lyrics along with the editing creates an atmosphere and a happy mood, this is done by the slow pace editing. The reason for slow pace editing is that there is a number of shots that last a few seconds but still a lot going on within the scene. The majority of shots used within the video is long shots, as i mentioned before this is due to the shots that last a while. Also with in the camera there is a lot going on with a large amounts of people with in the scenes.

What is the relationship between sound and image?

Due to most of the song being in Korean its had to state whether or not there is a relationship between the sound and image. With the scenes with in the video, it is most likely that there is not a relationship between the two. This is due to random scenes in the music video that makes it hard to believe there is a relationship within the video. Even though there is no relationship the video is still really effective.
