Treatment For Music Video

For our music video, we had to create a treatment and this simply shows an overview and synopsis of the task in hand.

Treatment for Music Video

Song selection: Proxies - Trojan (Inside Your Chest)

Genre: Electronica (song) Drama (video)
Audience: Teenagers, young adults.
Music Video Choice: Narrative as it follows a story.
Intertextuality: There is no real intertextuality as the video does not cross into any other texts.
Star Image: Unknown actors will be used meaning the video will have an ‘underdog’ status.

The Synopsis: The music video follows a journey of a male character starting off being dumped from a long term relationship from a girl. This leads to a tale of losing self control and going overboard. Another character will be performing or lip-syncing as its also known and be following the journey of the raged character. The journey ends up at a house party where the main character starts to binge drink and ends up collapsing.

The Locations: The first location will be the waterfront and dock area in the Suffolk town of Ipswich. This will soon follow with other locations in the town and work its way through the countryside areas surrounding the big town on the main characters journey ending up in a house, which will result in the final location.

Characters: The characters in our music video focus on the main character who will be played by a male. The next character that features is a female who delivers the bad news to the main character. Other characters in the video that feature are a few male members who deliver the lyrics and finally other background characters feature that will create the house party scene. These create a great atmosphere for the music video as it will show the intensity and craziness that happens with teenagers and their rebellious ways.

Part one of storyboard for music video

For the music video we have had the task to storyboard all of our ideas which involves creating diagrams and annotating them with different camera instructions, actions and sound/dialogue. Below is the first page of my storyboard and it shows the first three shots. These include the establishing shot to open the scene which pans across the Ipswich Waterfront. The second shot is the two characters sitting on a bench where the female characters reveals the bad news to the male character. The third shot on this page is a close up of the main character throwing a piece of jewellery or memorabilia which belongs to the female showing his shear frustration.

Evidence Of permission

  1. This is linked to the last post where Jack was granted permission by our band Proxies to use their song 'Trojan (Inside Your Chest)'.

As you can see this is used by a social networking site called Twitter. This important for bands to have accounts on these type of sites so that fans can keep up to date with their latest information and every now and again give back to the fans which is what they have done above.

Change Of Song

Originally we thought we used the song 'will you remember me'. After discussion with Jack. He knows an unsigned band called the Proxies who had a good song 'Trojan'. He has messaged the band and we are awaiting a reply from the band.

Andrew Goodwin Theory

Andrew Goodwin - Music Video Theory

Andrew Goodwin in his book Dancing in the Distraction Factory writes about what he defines as the characteristics of music videos.
  1. Demonstrates genre characteristics: Stage performance for metal/ heavy rock group but for more boy/ girl band there would be a dance routine and a narrative to the video.
  2. Relationship between lyrics and visuals: Visuals illustrates and amplify the lyrics.
  3. Relationship between music and visuals:  Visuals illustrates and amplify the visuals.
  4. Label Company: Lots of close ups on artist so the artist came develop motives.
  5. Frequent reference to the notion of looking: screens within screens, telescopes etc and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
  6. Often inter textual reference: To Films, TV programmes etc.
Worth Considering if music Video is performance, Narrative or concept based.
