Andrew Goodwin - Music Video Theory
Andrew Goodwin in his book Dancing in the Distraction Factory writes about what he defines as the characteristics of music videos.
- Demonstrates genre characteristics: Stage performance for metal/ heavy rock group but for more boy/ girl band there would be a dance routine and a narrative to the video.
- Relationship between lyrics and visuals: Visuals illustrates and amplify the lyrics.
- Relationship between music and visuals: Visuals illustrates and amplify the visuals.
- Label Company: Lots of close ups on artist so the artist came develop motives.
- Frequent reference to the notion of looking: screens within screens, telescopes etc and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
- Often inter textual reference: To Films, TV programmes etc.
Worth Considering if music Video is performance, Narrative or concept based.
