Filming Update.

Today in our A2 media lesson, me and jack walked down to the waterfront and got 2 minutes of footage. We varied the shots we got and now we going to start the editing process. We still have got to get the house party footage which we are going to get within the next couple of weeks.

Location Shots

A couple of days ago, Me and Jack went down to areas of ipswich including ipswich waterfront and countryside areas to take location shots for where will film our music video. We haven't got all the location shots as our last scene is at a house for the house party scene. These are the shots we took:

Shot List

The first initial shot will be an establishing shot which cover the whole of the Ipswich waterfront/dock area. This will showcase the male protagonist crouched on a bench whilst a female character is walking in his direction.
The next shot will be a medium close up which will change into a two shot enabling the audience to see the male and the female in conversation.
The rest of the shots that will be used during the music video will include long shots and this will probably be most common during the journey through the countryside sequence. Close ups will show the emotion of the character during his self destructive ways. For extra effect, I would like to experiment with a few of the shots at the house party scene with a fish eye lens. This would really capture the atmosphere and give off a great party spirit.

Mood Board

Above is a selection of images that have been developed from our initial mind map. We will discuss what they each mean and why we have chosen to use these.

The top left image is a picture of a distressed young woman who is representing binge drinking. This aspect will feature in our film in the the house party scene as the sad character will drink his sorrows away. This is the norm for a lot of teenagers and this takes place every weekend in their lives in the UK.

The top right image is a picture of a car chase. We decided not to include this as it would take a lot of time, and the right location is key. Also the cost to run vehicles such as cars can cost a lot so we will have to pass on this.

The next image is a description of a dead end in a relationship. This will feature at the start of our music video as a girl will end up breaking the heart of the male protagonist's heart. This will then lead to the destruction of his journey.

The bottom left image is an image of footsteps into the background. This represents the journey of a certain character. This aspect is included in our music video as it follows the self destructive journey of the guy that gets rejected by the girl right at the very start.

The bottom middle image is based on suicide. This is a big theme that is present in modern day Britain, as many teenagers are desperate to fit in or look the best however they don't agree with this and just end commiting suicide. This aspect does not feature in our music video as we feel its a bit too strong and people can get a different vibe from it.

The final image is a live video performance. This intially was one of my biggest ideas at the start as it could of been negotiable to film with the band. However this was shortlived that it would take a lot of time and money to find a slot with the band and a venue is near enough impossible in such a short amount of time.

Ideas Mind Map

Ideas

For the process of making our music video, the first stage was to note down some ideas that would lead to the development of the video. Below is the image which shows all of our original ideas.

As you can see we have made around 10 ideas and we came up with a clever idea of not just sticking to one idea as we wasn't sure if it would suit the video and sustain 3-4 minutes of footage. So instead we decided to incorporate a few ideas and mix it together to give more variety and not keep the conventions of the genre. Our final decision was to use a dead end in a relationship, raging teenagers and a journey for the character involved in the relationship. We will be using lip-syncing as well to add a bit more effect.

Feedback from results:

The majority of people we asked where female due to the lack of men in our media class. This could give a biased result towards the ideas that females enjoy. There was a mixed result for the next question, narrative based video received the most votes but it was very close between that and performance with only one vote in it. Narrative is what we were going with in the first place and these results have backed our decision. On the next question there was a majority winner in the length of the video which was 3-4 minutes, this is because its the length were you don't get bored due to being to long and not to short you don't get the video. The majority of people prefer a music video to be in colour, Me and Jack decide to go against and film in black and white because it adds suspense to the video and its surreal. The audience who filled in our questionnaire like to see a male protagonist in a narrative based music video and we are going with audience and using a male protagonist. Our audience watch a lot of videos, the majority watching 3-6 a day, therefore there feedback is important to us due to the amount of videos they watch and experience they have. The majority of our class enjoy rock and is there favourite genre. The song we have chosen from Proxies is a rock song so therefore the class should enjoy the song and music video we create. The favourite place for a music video to be hosted is at a festival, gig or area tours, as the band we have chosen are not doing any tours in the next couple of weeks we will not be able to do a festival music video. The next popular answer was anywhere, this tells us as a group it doesn't matter where the music video is shoot as long as its entertaining and keeps the viewer interested throughout the video. Everyone we asked in the questionnaire was aged 17 which is the target age we are targeting from 16-20, so the feedback we received will influence our final music video. Only one person have heard of the band proxies who'swhos song we are using. This good as it gives an underdog status to the song.

A2 Music Video Analysis: PSY Gangnam Style

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bZkp7q19f0

PSY - Gangnam Style

What makes this video effective?

This video is effective as its a very fast video with a lot going on. Everything is bright and easy to see.
This good as audiences will watch the video over and over as it easy to watch even know there is a lot going on. Also the video is effective due to the certain dance that the male protagonist does, this is repeated when ever the chorus comes on. The dance is really effective as it easy to do and audiences will remember the dance when ever the song is played on the radio for example. The video is very aesthetically pleasing to watch and makes you laugh at the same time which is always good for the audience to be happy when watching a video.  This is also very effective as it is a genre no one have had before, its like a korean pop. Both that and the dance are possibly the reason why its so popular in the UK and other parts of the world.

How are techniques (mise-en-scene, editing, camera work and sound) used to create an atmosphere and mood?

There are various locations used throughout the video, This is due to the video being a concept based video with a bit of performance in the dance that PSY does. The upbeat beast and lyrics along with the editing creates an atmosphere and a happy mood, this is done by the slow pace editing. The reason for slow pace editing is that there is a number of shots that last a few seconds but still a lot going on within the scene. The majority of shots used within the video is long shots, as i mentioned before this is due to the shots that last a while. Also with in the camera there is a lot going on with a large amounts of people with in the scenes.

What is the relationship between sound and image?

Due to most of the song being in Korean its had to state whether or not there is a relationship between the sound and image. With the scenes with in the video, it is most likely that there is not a relationship between the two. This is due to random scenes in the music video that makes it hard to believe there is a relationship within the video. Even though there is no relationship the video is still really effective.

A2 Music Video Analysis: Proxies - Trojan (inside your chest)

Proxies - Trojan (inside your chest)

What makes the video effective?

The video is made up of there highlights and footage from there recent tour with Hadouken , these is good as it makes the video more meaningful for the fans and the group its self. This is meaningful due the group being able to give back to the fans who where on the tour and those who couldn't make it to the tour. The video is really effective because the video starts slow just like the song and then builds up with crowd scenes when the tempo of the music increases.

How are techniques (mise-en-scene, editing, camerawork and sound) used to create atmosphere and mood?

The setting creates atmosphere as its from there latest tour, so therefore you will get the crowd noise in the background, this is good because builds the atmosphere for the song.  In the video there are wearing everyday clothes, this is due to it being there own footage they got, so they haven't wasted money getting a director to make the music video. therefore no costume you don't see everyday in life, so its more realistic then other videos you see now a days. The editing starts of slow pace just like the music itself therefore creating relationship, and then editing speeds up when the music does. So the editing matches the pace and tempo of the song itself. There is various camera shots used throughout the video,  An example of a shot used within the video is a long shot of the crowd. The only extra sound coming from the video is from the crowd.

What is the relationship between sound and image?

There is no relationship between sound and image this is because the footage is from the tour and done by the band themselves. This is effective because you don't see this sort of video every day. Most videos there is a relationship between relationship and image but the footage does work with the sound.
